COMMUNITY SERVICE & HEALTH EDUCATION

Community Service - The Community Service mini-course offers its students an opportunity to learn and develop through thoughtfully organized service projects in the local community. The course provides students with structured time in which to plan and reflect on their service experience. It increases their knowledge and understanding of society and develops their self-esteem and responsibility.

Health Education 

The goal of the Grade 6 Health Education exploratory is to enable the students to develop a greater awareness of the everyday behaviors and choices that affect their own well being. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own actions and decisions. The main units cover nutrition, body systems, peer pressure, stress management, and more.


APPLIED TECHNOLOGY & ART EXPLORATION

Applied Technology - During Applies Technology students will develop their problem-solving, designing and model-building skills in this six-week exploratory course. As they work through the Design Process their projects will culminate in hands-on activities. The students will deepen their understanding of scientific and engineering principles associated with the construction and testing of static structures, including weight bearing towers and bridges.

Art Exploration

This six-week introductory course designed for six grade students incorporates art activities which center on using a variety of media to help guide students to explore basic art concepts. The major emphasis in student learning is on color theory, craftsmanship and understanding and recognizing what makes a strong composition. During this six-week course, students will participate in class discussions, develop creative problem solving skills and connect key concepts between the visual arts and other subject areas.


MUSIC EXPLORATION & DRAMA EXPLORATION

Music Exploration - In Music Exploration, students will explore a myriad of topics in a challenging, fun, and supportive environment. Students will work on discovering their voice, will learn vocal techniques, basic music theory, note reading skills, and will learn more about rhythm through playing instruments. Students will rehearse different genres of music. They will have the chance to create music through improvisation, composition, and arrangements of musical compositions.

Drama Exploration

In Drama, students look at play building techniques to create self-devised drama. They focus on using narrative structures, images and issues of importance to create three separate performances. Through this process they develop an understanding of voice, movement, space and rehearsal techniques.
