PHILOSOPHY

The Cairo American College English/Language Arts Program is designed to support and challenge students in developing the highest degree of conscientious and informed control over their appreciation and use of the English language.

The curriculum emphasizes the development of the powers of reading comprehension, analysis, and critical thinking. All courses are designed in a manner that challenges students to develop unity, coherence, clarity, and conciseness, as well as fluency in the communication of ideas through oral and written composition for both native and non-native speakers. The English program aids in the development of advanced language skills by offering opportunities for thinking, listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Literature is presented to the learner for several reasons, foremost, to give opportunities to read, study, and discuss great books and ideas.  An essential element of a CAC student’s literacy education is grounded in the critical analysis of literature.  Also important is a sense of aesthetics and imagination.
