Next week we are welcoming a group of 13 international school teachers who are coming from outside of Egypt to observe and learn from our teachers about the Reading and Writing Workshop. There will be a mixture of presentations and observations in the classrooms. Thank you to Mrs Taryn Carr, Ms Carole Widding, Mrs LeeAnn Kasal and their amazing students for sharing their expertise in the workshop!

Words are powerful! A group of grade 3 students recently wrote persuasive letters and one of the topics was about the benefits of outdoor eating. As a result, one grade level at a time is welcome to eat outside. Students may also choose to eat in the lunchroom too if eating outside does not suit them. Way to go writers. You can make a difference!

Grade 1 students visited Mohamed Ali Mosque at the Citadel on Tuesday as a follow up activity on their unit “Mohamed Ali and Modern Egypt.” They explored the main architectural components of the mosque. They saw the Citadel walls and towers, and admired the calligraphy, floral patterns, and geometric designs on the mosque walls. They also had a panoramic view of Cairo.

KG Music Informance

Parents please come enjoy and learn about your child's music making on Sunday afternoon, April 2. Your child's presentation will be at the following time: KGS at 2:05-2:35 and KGC at 2:35-3:05. The Music Room is ES 18 (ground floor past the Health Office; the last room on the left). Please try to be on time. The children have much to share in 30 minutes!

Book Parade 2017 - April 4

Dear parents and guardians,
The CAC ES Library Council will be hosting a book parade on April 4. All ES students are invited to dress up as a favorite character from any book and parade around our elementary lawn at assembly.

Dressing up is optional, but lots of fun. Students can wear store bought costumes but making your own is more fun.

Here are some ideas from last year. You can also find more on Mrs. Fitzgerald’s Pinterest page or by doing a Google search on “book character costumes.”

    All Acts Rehearsal in the Theater; Wednesday, April 26th from 3:15-5:15. Bus students will be allowed to ride the late bus, departing 5:30.

Dear parents/guardians of Second and Third Grade students,

Please, take the opportunity to enjoy some of the pieces your child has been working on during music this year and attend his/her upcoming concert. Two programs will be presented in the CAC Theater:

  1. Wednesday, March 29 at 10:00 a.m. Both Second and Third Grade classes will perform for students and teachers.
  2. Wednesday, March 29 at 5:30 p.m. Both Second and Third Grade classes will perform for family and friends. Students should be in place by 5:20 p.m.

Your child will be expected to attend both the morning and the evening concerts due to special instrument, singing, and movement assignments. Also, this is when your child’s behavior and participation are evaluated in a concert setting.

As this is a very special event, please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the evening concert; girls can wear dresses or skirts, which are to the knee or below, and boys can wear dress slacks, dress shirt and tie, or a shirt with a collar. If possible, please try to avoid blue jeans, T-shirts with pictures/advertising, or tennis shoes. Attire for the morning concert can be more casual as students will have recess and maybe PE during the day.

The words and form of each song are available both on the ES Music Blog and as a hard copy so that your child can review and memorize the pieces. Knowing this material will help alleviate stress during the performances. Another stress reliever will be punctuality. Please ensure that your child is at the theater on time before the evening concert. You will want to arrive early as well so you can get a good seat!

Egypt Festival Opening Assembly - CAC’s Got Talent

You are invited to participate in the "CAC’s Got Talent" episode in our annual Egypt Festival Day opening assembly. The assembly will share the many talents of our community, students, parents faculty and staff. We are going to sing the Arabic song, "Halawet Shamsena". The song describes the many beautiful aspects of Egypt.
Rehearsals are on Mondays after school at 3:15- 3:30 - and/or Thursdays 1:40 - 2:00 in Room 227.

New Dry-Fit ES PE Uniforms coming soon!

In continuation to the integration of the ES with MS & HS, starting 2017/2018 the ES will be changing its PE uniform to match that of MS. The new uniform will consist of a Red t-shirt and black shorts; both being Dry-fit!!

Samples of all the sizes will be available for pre-orders on April 26 (at the ES family Picnic) and April 27 (By the theatre where the ES Talent Show will take place).

Please note that next year (2017/18) will be considered a transitional year so the kids will be allowed to wear both the current PE uniform as well as the new one. The current school uniforms will be on sale starting April 26.

So make sure to come check out the new uniforms and place your orders to ensure your child receives the right size!!

For those who do not pre-order, the school will measure the children and make an estimate of the sizes to order for the school store, where you will be able to buy the uniform next year, should you wish to buy it.



Shelter Practice

We will be having a drill on April 5 to practice shelter (lockdown) procedures. Teachers will discuss this as “shelter practice” with students in age-appropriate ways, but you may also want to also talk to your child about the subject. Last year, we shared this article with helpful suggestions for talking to children about safety procedures and practices. One of the things addressed is the impact of the terminology we use. The drill will be held at 11:00 am, so if you are on campus, we ask that you follow instructions when asked to go to a safe place. Everyone who is outside will be moved to the ES basement.


Founder’s Day

March 30 will be CAC’s second annual Founders Day. CAC was founded in 1945, and in the last 71 years, thousands of people have come together to make it the unique learning community that it is today. Founders Day is a time to celebrate not only our four founding organizations but also the people who make our personal experience here special.

We’re celebrating all of next week by asking CAC community members in Cairo and around the world to show their school pride and share stories of what made their time here special. In class on Monday, March 27, teachers will be distributing cards to students so they can write letters to the person at CAC that they’re most thankful for. On March 30, we’re asking CAC community members around the world to wear their school colors. Come to school on Thursday, March 30 wearing your CAC spirit wear to participate. We’ll also be having an assembly on campus to celebrate! Parents are welcome to attend.


Girls Get Strong 

Girls Get StrongGirls Get Strong will host its second health and fitness conference on Saturday, March 25th. This year we are expanding our model and inviting other international schools in Cairo to join us! This year’s theme is Breaking Boundaries and it is without a doubt we have assembled a wide variety of experts to help our young women break the boundaries preventing them from living healthy lifestyles.

Some of the topics we will be addressing this year are gender profiling in athletics, goal setting, injury prevention and rehabilitation, and nutrition. The conference will feature licensed counseling therapists, nutritionists, personal trainers, and physiotherapists. Along with learning from qualified professionals, students will participate in a variety of fitness activities that include barre, body attack, crossfit, kickboxing, step aerobics, TRX, yoga, and zumba

From the CAC HS Visual Arts Department

The CAC HS Visual Arts Department is proud to announce a special, upcoming art display. Over forty CAC custodians are represented by 64 HS Digital Arts and Studio Arts students in this exciting exhibition, entitled "The CAC Community Portraiture Project". This project challenges students to celebrate and honor the work of the General Services Staff at school; in our pilot year of this project, we began with the largest group, asking our custodians to participate on a voluntary basis. Students first interacted one-on-one with custodians on campus through an interview. This interaction offered both students and staff a starting point for the project. As a result, our HS art students thoughtfully considered their relationship to staff members on campus as they created a variety of painted and digital portraits highlighting the background and personalities of their art subjects. In a private "closing ceremony" on March 27th, students will give their completed portraits to staff as a final thank you. The Visual Arts Department invites you to view this incredible, colorful display which represents a collective sum of 1,500 hours. Our students' creative and purposeful art choices truly celebrate the breadth and depth of the rich community here at CAC. The show will be on view in the Theater Foyer from the opening night of Xanadu the Musical on 23 March until 10am on 27 March.

Spring is here! - Flower Arranging Workshop

Join us on April 5th from 1:00 - 3:00pm on the Elementary field for a special Flower arranging workshop in the outdoor setting around our beautiful Elementary school tree!

Malak Taher, with the support of her niece Ingy Taher, will provide step-by-step instructions for stunning yet simple floral projects and equip you with the skills to customize arrangements at home; Whether hosting a party, helping out with a friend's wedding, or wishing to incorporate the beauty of flowers into everyday life, this will allow you to do so!

Malak will cover everything from texture and color to foliage and containers, providing an overall approach to living and working with flowers, with an eye toward fresh, local, wild, seasonally influenced floral design.

Malak Taher is the founder & CEO of Flower Power, Egypt’s first floral design house renowned for its flowers and creative displays. With over 30 years of market expertise and a full-fledged team working across Egypt, the one-stop design house offers styling for weddings, themed events and corporate functions as well as merchandise displays and creative flowers for prestigious hotels and fashion brands.

Syrian Cooking Event Thank you

A very big thank you to our Syrian community for giving our parents a chance to roll up their sleeves and get cooking!! Our parents had a delightful afternoon learning how to make delicious Kibbeh Sajieh & Kishke while listening to traditional Syrian music!! After an afternoon of cooking, our Syrian moms treated everyone to some traditional ice cream topped with the Syrian version of "Cotton Candy". Our parents even got the chance to bring some food back home for their families to try! Thank you very much to our Syrian community for allowing our parents to experience such a deliciously cultural & fun afternoon!

Walking Tour of Heliopolis

*Please note that due to a national holiday the date of this trip has been changed from April 25 to April 26.
We will stop by the Baron Palace, built by the Belgian-born industrialist, Baron-General Eduard Louis Joseph Empain (1852-1929) who also founded the modern Heliopolis area in 1907.
We will walk through the beautiful El Korba section, a quaint shopping district that boasts original architecture, fascinating cultural sites as well as some of Cairo’s finest cafés and restaurants. We will walk in the European style commercial streets, and try to see the Basilique church, Adly Madgar Jewish synagogue, Hippodrome square, Maryland park, El Tahra palace, and Saray el Qubbah. If there is time, we may stop at a cafe for coffee or lunch.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes.

The Citadel, The Sultan Hassan Mosque & Madrasa, Al-Rifa’i Mosque

The Saladin Citadel of Cairo is a medieval Islamic fort, on Mokattam hill near the center of Cairo. The Citadel was once famous for its fresh breeze and grand views of the city.
The complex includes the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, which dominates the skyline of Cairo with its beautiful alabaster dome, the Mosque of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad, the Mosque of Sulayman Pasha, Gawhara Palace; and several museums. 

Afterwards we will visit the nearby Sultan Hassan Mosque & Madrasa, and Al-Rifa’i Mosque.
*Please cover shoulders and knees, wear loose pants or a long skirt, and bring a scarf.*

All PTO trips cost 100LE per person for transportation, a professional tour guide and security when necessary. Entrance fees, meals, refreshments, and any shopping are the participants responsibility. We meet at 8:15 a.m. at the back gate of CAC and the bus will leave promptly at 8:30 a.m. We will return to school by 2:00 p.m. Please be sure to leave a mobile phone number when you register. A.P.E. needs your used Nespresso Capsules!

In support of Earth Day and CAC's relationship with A.P.E., (The Association For The Protection Of The Environment http://www.ape.org.eg/), the PTO has organized a school-wide collection of the much-loved Nespresso capsules!
After collection, CAC will deliver the empty capsules to A.P.E., who use them to create fun jewelry. We also look forward to a school visit from A.P.E. in the future as another way to support their cause.

What to do: after use, empty out the capsules and start a collection bag. Drop off boxes will be on campus starting April 2. Start saving those capsules!!! Lets see how much we can collect for A.P.E!!!
