Eagle Eye 03-30-2017

Blue skies and a pleasant temperature made our Tuesday assembly a lovely way to start the day with, D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read). Fourth grade students went to Ibn Tulun Mosque this week to study the architecture. They have been learning and researching in class about the Mosque so it’s wonderful they had a chance to appreciate it in person! Our 2nd and 3rd graders impressed us with their music concert on Wednesday, incorporating singing, dancing, instruments, and dramatizations. Our ES Student Council leaders are very excited about their fundraising opportunity, movie night, this afternoon in the ES Hall. For more details, please click here

Book Parade 2017 - April 4
From the CAC ES Library Council:

Dear parents and guardians,
The CAC ES Library Council will be hosting a book parade on April 4. All ES students are invited to dress up as a favorite character from any book and parade around our elementary lawn at assembly.

Dressing up is optional, but lots of fun. Students can wear store bought costumes but making your own is more fun.

Here are some ideas from last year. You can also find more on Mrs. Fitzgerald’s Pinterest page or by doing a Google search on “book character costumes.”

New database trial

We are considering a new Britannica Encyclopedia product for our school. It is called Britannica Launch Packs and can be found here. Use the Quick Login when prompted to log in. (Don’t know the Quick Login? All students in grades 2 and up should know it. If they don’t, email me. We do not publish it on public webpages.) The Launch Packs are collections of articles and media about different social studies topics. Of interest to the elementary school are the packs on Ancient Egypt (grade 3) and Nubia (grade 2), the US revolution (grade 4) and Aztecs (grade 5). Our trial will run for only 2 weeks, so be sure to check it out before April 11. Let me know if you have any trouble with it or questions.

New Dry-Fit ES PE Uniforms coming soon!

In continuation to the integration of the ES with MS & HS, starting 2017/2018 the ES will be changing its PE uniform to match that of MS. The new uniform will consist of a Red t-shirt and black shorts; both being Dry-fit!!

Samples of all the sizes will be available for pre-orders on April 26 (at the ES family Picnic) and April 27 (By the theatre where the ES Talent Show will take place).

Please note that next year (2017/18) will be considered a transitional year so the kids will be allowed to wear both the current PE uniform as well as the new one. The current school uniforms will be on sale starting April 26.

So make sure to come check out the new uniforms and place your orders to ensure your child receives the right size!!

For those who do not pre-order, the school will measure the children and make an estimate of the sizes to order for the school store, where you will be able to buy the uniform next year, should you wish to buy it.

Fifth Grade Junior Girl Scouts

Hello, parents and teachers. This is from the FIfth Grade Junior Girl Scouts, and we are happy to present that we are going to be holding a bake sale on April 13, after school in the back and front gates, right after school. We are working on our Bronze Award, which is the highest award you get in Juniors, so all the money will go to the Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals, which is a society that houses dogs. The Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (E.S.M.A.) was formed in 2007 to save dogs from a horrific shooting spree that shot street dogs, which were sent by the Egyptian government. Then, a group of Egyptians and expatriates came together to fight this terrible group of people, and to protect and rescue the animals in that were in danger. ESMA is a charity, and has a shelter and adoption center.  They currently house about 300 dogs and 300 cats.  Help us by raising money for them and for the injured dogs by coming to the sale. We will also be holding other sales at unknown dates, so keep checking the news letter!

Shelter Practice - Repeat

We will be having a drill on April 5 to practice shelter (lockdown) procedures. Teachers will discuss this as “shelter practice” with students in age-appropriate ways, but you may also want to also talk to your child about the subject. Last year, we shared this article with helpful suggestions for talking to children about safety procedures and practices. One of the things addressed is the impact of the terminology we use. Staff members will be going over this in advance, as we work together to ensure that students feel safe, protected, and aware of what to do in different situations. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/judith-simon-prager-phd/talking-to-kids-about-a-lockdown_b_4117330.html
The drill will be held at 11:00 am, so if you are on campus, we ask that you follow instructions when asked to go to a safe place. Everyone who is outside will be moved to the ES basement.
