BOOSTING CAC'S SPIRIT!
Members of the CAC community stopping by the Cafe Greco outlet on campus in between classes will notice a new window display showcasing CAC spirit wear. This window provides a glimpse into the school’s newly renovated Spirit Store run by CAC’s Booster Club.
The Booster Club is a volunteer organization run by parents that raises money to support CAC athletics and activities. “The only thing we want is the best for our kids. That’s why we’re doing it,” explains Angela Ursem, a Booster who works with the Spirit Store.
The Boosters raise money to help fund new athletics equipment like the basketball scoreboard installed last year and events on campus like the Girls Get Strong initiative. The Boosters also raise money to provide students with need-based scholarships to travel to the International Schools’ Sports Tournaments (ISST) and other athletic tournaments abroad.
According to Chris Christie, a Booster and former CAC track and field coach, the Club supports athletics because “[CAC] is a big community… it just rounds [out] the whole educational system when you have athletics ...and the opportunity to play.”
Not only do the Boosters raise money for athletics but they also cultivate a sense of school spirit at CAC. The Boosters run the Spirit Cafe, which encompasses the concessions for all of the school’s athletic events like swim meets, YSL soccer tournaments, basketball tournaments, and ISST. “We’ve even started selling ice cream on Thursday after school to raise money!” explains Christe.
Open every weekday except Tuesdays from 2:30 to 4:00, the Spirit Store is a one-stop-shop for CAC spirit gear. The store features several new items this year including CAC swim caps, beach towels, and ID card holders that can be attached to the backs of cell phone cases. Angela explains that by providing spirit gear, the Boosters give students the opportunity to “show their commitment to the school” when traveling and on campus. The store also sells gift vouchers, which make excellent birthday or holiday presents. CAC alumni and families in the US can shop for CAC spirit gear online.
The Booster Club is always looking for more volunteers, because having more help allows them to make more of a difference at the school. Angela explains that “the beautiful thing is that all of these volunteers are [working] to help each other and to help our kids, and I think we’re a great team.”
The team is looking for volunteers to run the Spirit Store, assist with specific events, and even bake goods for the Spirit Cafe.
