Kira Goodwin Legacy Scholarship - Principal’s Leadership Award

CAC Alumna, Kira Goodwin of British Columbia and Alberta, Canada lived a vibrant but short 32 years. She was taken from this world by an avalanche while backcountry skiing in the West Kootenay mountains on December 31st, 2017. She had a lust for adventure, was an avid traveler, exceptional athlete and a lover of nature and wildlife. She was passionate about living and had a smile and personality that were larger than life. She made family everywhere she went, not just friends. Kira loved her career in nursing and used her skills to serve in Neonatal Intensive Care, the Chemotherapy Clinic and the Operating Room. She was an ambassador to Canada everywhere she traveled and loved to immerse herself deeply in culture. She was generous and kind in life and death. Although Kira could not be saved, she was an organ donor and therefore directly responsible for supporting the lives of others. Kira was one of a kind and will never be forgotten.

In October of 2018, Kira’s family came to visit CAC to participate in the unveiling of a memorial stone for Kira. Kira’s brother, Bryce Goodwin, who has a career in 3D Animation, was also invited to present a workshop with HS students. Her mother, Lori Goodwin,  gave a presentation to the National Honor Society students of which Kira had been a member. Through the Office of Advancement, the family was able to establish an award in Kira’s name at the school, in memory of Kira’s spirit, and her love for doing good and giving back, and to reflect Kira’s values, qualities and priorities. This award, the Kira Goodwin Legacy Scholarship, is given to a student who demonstrates leadership qualities whether in the arena of athletics or academia. The award is given to students who strive to always lead by example and are role models for all CAC students. 

This award was established in 2019 under the Principal’s Leadership Award, which is given to a 9-12 grade student who exhibits qualities of positive leadership within the school.  That leadership can be shown in a number of ways:

1. Leadership by example

2. Leadership by acclamation

3. Academic Leadership 

4. Leadership in Student Government

5. Leadership in sports, activities

6. Leadership through role modeling
