Five Amazing Historic & Cultural Sites in Cairo

Cairo is one of the world’s most famous cities, and is home to some truly magnificent sites. And while many travelers and tourists visit this remarkable place each year, living as an expat in Egypt offers a different experience - the unique and wonderful opportunity to explore these sites slowly, truly immersing yourself in their rich history and culture.
With so many amazing options, it’s almost impossible to pick only 5 to highlight, but we’ve done our best!
Great Pyramids of Giza
Okay, this one is a bit obvious. But you can’t leave the most famous structures in the world off the list. No adventure in Egypt is complete without a visit to the Pyramids of Giza. Climb to the center of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, marvel at the Great Sphinx, take a ride on a camel, or just walk around and absorb it all - whatever you choose to do, it will be an unforgettable experience.
Grand Egyptian Museum
When fully open, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) will be a treasure trove of ancient artifacts, and the largest archaeological museum in the world. Located near the Pyramids of Giza, the GEM will feature thousands of pieces, including the complete Tutankhamun (King Tut) collection.
Citadel and Mohammed Ali Mosque
Perched atop the Mokattam Hill, the Citadel of Cairo offers panoramic views of the city and houses the stunning Mohammed Ali Mosque. This Ottoman-era mosque, with its grand dome and minarets, is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture. The Citadel itself is a historical fortress that has stood guard over Cairo since the medieval era.
Hanging Church
While Islam is the dominant religion of Egypt, Coptic Christians are the largest ethno-religious minority, making up about 10 percent of the population. The Hanging Church, in the heart of Old Cairo, is a breathtaking example of Coptic architecture. Built on the southern gate of the Roman Babylon Fortress, this church has been a significant religious site for centuries. Its beautifully adorned interior, wooden roof in the shape of Noah’s ark, and rich history make it a must-see.
Khan el-Khalili Market
Located on one of Cairo’s oldest streets, the Khan is a historic bazaar, with labyrinthine alleys and stalls offering everything from spices to jewelry. It's the perfect place to soak up the local atmosphere, haggle for souvenirs, and enjoy a cup of Egyptian coffee.
Bonus Site - Saqqara
Okay, we really tried to keep it to 5, but we just have to tell you about Saqqara! Located south of Cairo, Saqqara was the necropolis (burial site) of the Ancient Egyptian capital, Memphis, and is home to Egypt’s oldest pyramid, the Pyramid of Djoser. Visitors can enter various tombs, take in the beautiful wall paintings, and even learn about the 100 cat mummies and 5 lion mummies discovered on site. Emptier and quieter than the Giza pyramids, Saqqara is definitely worth the short drive from Cairo.
