VISUAL ARTS

The International Festival is a long held beloved tradition at Cairo American College. In many ways it represents what our School is truly about, celebrating diversity and offering an opportunity to learn about and explore other cultures. The Festival gives our community the chance to showcase their Culture through cuisine, performance and activities.

Our guests started their journey at the festival walking through a pathway decorated with flags representing all the countries that we proudly host at CAC. They were then welcomed to the field by a whiff of freshly cooked food from all around the globe. Our community got to explore and sample a variety of delicious foods; from the classic American Hotdog to the Syrian Shawerma, you got a taste of the world in one place.

Food wasn’t the only standout at our Festival. Everyone also got to enjoy activities like learning to write their name in Japanese calligraphy and practicing their football skills at the Brazilian booth. Not to mention the many photo opportunities around. Our guests got to give us their very own Mona Lisa smile, or take a selfie in a Palestine shaped mirror, and even get to be Arminian for a photo. There were also beautiful performances from our community members. The South American group performed a mesmerizing dance that merged different styles from the region and the Palestinians gave us an emotional spoken word poetry performance.

The day drew to a close with the raffle prizes and winner announcements. Our community came together to bring fun, diverse and exciting raffle prizes. The raffle items ranged from country baskets that brought so much excitement, delicious snacks you could win and of course the TV that everyone wanted a chance at.

Our wonderful PTO did an amazing job organizing and planning the Festival giving everyone a chance to enjoy different cultures, food and of course prizes!

Renowned writer, actor, and educator Ian Pike recently visited Cairo American College (CAC), captivating students across all divisions with his wealth of experience and expertise. His visit sparked a wave of creativity and inspiration among students of all levels. His engaging sessions, which provided valuable insights into the art of storytelling, left a lasting impression on the young minds.

In his creative writing workshops with high school students, Ian delved into his writing process, emphasizing the importance of character development. By challenging students to create a character based on a photo, he encouraged them to focus on the essence of who the character is rather than just their appearance. Through group discussions and prompting questions, students learned to flesh out well-rounded characters, understanding how diverse narratives can emerge from a single persona.

For elementary school students, Ian's storytelling session was lively, filled with creativity and exploration. Grade 5 students showcased short skits based on historical figures, receiving real-time feedback from Ian. His suggestions, such as emphasizing stillness to captivate the audience's attention, helped students refine their performances and comprehend the subtleties of stage storytelling.

In the middle school cabaret session, Ian brought laughter and spontaneity to the classroom. Through humorous exercises like sound-effect improvisation, students learned the art of comedic timing and collaboration. Ian's feedback on embracing spontaneity and adapting to audience reactions instilled confidence in students, guiding them towards comedic excellence.

In a heartwarming reunion, Chee Hoon Lee, affectionately known as Cheesey Hoon Lee during his school days at CAC, recently revisited the campus, unlocking a flood of cherished memories. As he strolled through the halls that once echoed with his laughter, Chee shared captivating stories that encapsulate the essence of his unique journey.

One notable tale centers around his relocation to Singapore and the promise he made to his father—a commitment to provide his own sons with the invaluable gifts of a quality education and proficiency in the English language. This commitment mirrored the legacy passed down to him when his father moved them across the globe and enrolled him in CAC.

The reunion took a delightful turn as Chee, now accompanied by his son, revisited those same corners of CAC after 35 years. Together, they recreated some of Chee’s most cherished memories in the very same spots.

Chee delved into his vibrant past as a member of the swimming team and a dedicated lifeguard, recounting anecdotes from the pool that painted a vivid picture of camaraderie and shared passion. His reminiscences extended to his last day at CAC, a poignant moment of lying on the grass, yearning to rewind time and wake up to the anticipation of the first day of school.

A particularly nostalgic discovery awaited Chee in the Aquatic Center—the unmistakable signature he left behind decades ago on a photo by the pool, where he spent countless hours. The framed emblem of his time at CAC became a poignant reminder of growth, evolution, and the enduring spirit of the school.

However, the trip down memory lane also took a mischievous turn as Chee, in good humor, confessed to a playful act of 'borrowing' the number 1 sign from the pool. This light-hearted mischief added a touch of humor to the nostalgic journey, reflecting the enduring spirit of the mischievous student he once was.

Chee Hoon Lee's return to CAC serves as a testament to the profound impact of the school on its alumni. It's not just a place; or, as his son cheekily joked, "just another school"; it's a reservoir of memories, a keeper of dreams, and a timeless sanctuary that continues to resonate in the hearts of those who call it home.
